The questions to ask any wedding photographer before you book

The questions to ask any wedding photographer before you book

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the first big decisions you make, and it is hard to compare people when every website shows lovely pictures. After nearly twenty years and more than 800 weddings, we know which questions help couples most. Ask them of us, and ask them of anyone else you are thinking of booking.

Who will actually be there?

Some photographers send an associate on the day, or bring in a second shooter you have never met. Ask who exactly will be photographing your wedding, and whether it is one person or two. With us it is always Nick and Nic on a full-day collection, and Nick alone on the six-hour Collection One.

What is their style?

Candid, posed, moody, bright: there is no right answer, only the right one for you. Ours is a mix of candid, contemporary and natural photography, and most couples come to us for exactly that. Make sure the style you love on the website is the style you will get.

What happens if you are not comfortable in front of a camera?

Nearly everyone says they hate having their photo taken, and a good photographer will have heard it a hundred times. Ask how they put people at ease. We describe ourselves as photo ninjas: we would rather catch the real moments when you and your guests least expect it than march you through a long list of poses.

Are they insured, and what do they shoot on?

This one is easy to forget and matters if something goes wrong. Ask whether they carry public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and what happens if a camera fails on the day. We are fully insured and shoot on professional Canon equipment, so your images are safe as well as stunning.

What exactly is in the price?

Two quotes are rarely comparing like with like. Ask how many hours of coverage you get, how many photographers, roughly how many edited images, whether you can download them at full resolution and whether an album is included. Our pricing page lays all of this out for each collection, so you can see what you are paying for. Our full-day collections run from three hours before the ceremony until after the first dance.

How and when do I get my photos?

Ask how the images arrive and how long you will wait. Ours are usually online within two weeks of the wedding, in a personal, password-protected gallery with a mobile phone app, where you can view and download every image in high resolution.

What is the booking process?

Find out what the deposit is, when the balance is due and what happens next. For us, a £200 deposit secures your date and the balance is due one month before the wedding. There is more on this in our FAQs.

A last thought

Photographs are the one thing you keep from the day, so it is worth taking your time. Trust your gut as well as the checklist: you will spend more of your wedding day with your photographer than with almost anyone else, so you want to like them.

You can see how we work through a day on our weddings page.
